Housing for International Students

There are three Nagoya University residences available to international students: Foreign Students House (Ryugakusei Kaikan), International Residence, and International Ohmeikan House.
The period of residency in each residence is limited to 6 months.

Nagoya University Dormitories for International Students

>>1. Foreign Students House (20 minutes by bus. )

Room rent	5,900 yen per month (plus a monthly service fee (6,000 yen) and utility charges) for a single room. 11,900 yen per month (plus a monthly service fee (4,500 yen) and utility charges) for a couple room. 14,200 yen per month (plus a monthly service fee (4,500 yen) and utility charges).for a family room.

>>2. International Residence Higashiyama (on Higashiyama campus)

>>3. International Ohmeikan House (10 minutes on foot. Japanese students are also housed in this dormitory. )

Housing for International Researchers

There are six Nagoya University residences available to international research fellows: International Residence Higashiyama, Researchers Village HIGASHIYAMA, Noyori Conference Hall, Idaka-cho Residence, Researchers Village DAIKO and Researchers Village YAKUMO.

The period of residency in each residence is more than 1 month, and limited to 1 year.

Nagoya University Dormitories for Internaitonal Researchers

>>1. International Residence Higashiyama (on campus)

>>2. Researchers Village HIGASHIYAMA (on Higashiyama campus)

>>3. Housing in Noyori Conference Hall (on Higashiyama campus)

>>4. Idaka-cho Residence (3 minutes on foot from Issha station on subway Higashiyama Line. )

Room rent	52,000 yen per month (In addition to rent, there is a monthly service fee (5,000 yen), as well as utility charges)

>>6. Researchers Village YAKUMO

Facilities	9 rooms for couples and families (53.00 m2)
Each room is equipped with	kitchenette, bath, toilet, bed, desk, chair, air-conditioner, refrigerator, microwave oven, TV and washer, etc.
Room rent	60,000 yen per month (In addition to rent, there is a monthly service fee (4,700 yen), and bedding lease fee as well as utility charges)

Public Housing

>>1.Municipal Housing

>>Application procedure:

1. Lots are drawn four times a year (May, August, November and February). Application forms for lots will be distributed during the application periods at ward offices and the office called 'Sumai no Madoguchi' in Sakae. Fill in the form and send it by postel mail.
2. Students can apply to join the waiting list anytime. Applicants on the waiting list must submit their alien registration certificate and other necessary documents at the time of application directly to 'Sumai no Madoguchi' in Sakae.

>>Eligibility

• Applicants should be Nagoya city residents.
• Applicants are required to live with family members (spouse / children). A single person cannot apply.
• Applicants do not need a guarantor, but a contact person for emergencies is necessary (The Joint Surety Service for Residential Lease by the Nagoya University International Student Support Association may act as your contact person).
• Applicants must join the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan (Ryugakusei Jutaku Sogo Hosho).

>>Facilities
The apartment's bathroom is not installed with a bathtub and boiler. Their installation costs need to be paid by the resident.

>>Deposit
Applicants must pay a deposit that is equivalent to three months' rent.

>>Rent
10,000 - 15,000 yen per month, depending on the location and floor space

>>Many International students of Nagoya University live in "Umemori-sou" (Meito-ku), "Honji-sou"(Moriyama-ku), and "Inokoishi-so" (Meito-ku)

>>Students must be prepared to be on standby on the waiting list for at least six months or more.

Company Housing

Some companies make their staff dormitories available to international students. Eligibility and other requirements are as follows.

• Company housing is available only for independently financed degree seeking students.
• Most of the company housing is for single students.
• Japanese language ability, familiarity with Japanese customs and lifestyle, and a willingness to mingle with company employees are prerequisites.
• Application period: Mostly in January for moving in April, but the time of entry varies. Information is posted on the bulletin board of each school.
• Place to Apply: International Student Exchange Division of Nagoya University (1st floor, ECIS)
• Interviews will be held after the applications, and sometimes the balance of applicants' nationalities will be considered.
• Applicants must join the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan (Ryugakusei Jutaku Sogo Hosho).

Private Apartments

Private accommodation is usually found through an estate agent.A deposit, key money (non-refundable gratuity money), commission, one month's advance rent, fire and housing insurance, common service charge etc, must be paid at the outset. Altogether 6 or 7 times the value of one month's rent will be necessary. In Nagoya, the average rent will range from 35,000 yen to 60,000 yen per month for a single room. Usually a guarantor is required, and students may ask the Nagoya University International Student Support Association to act as one.Further, if you are an independently financed student, you can apply for an Overseas Students Housing Deposit Loan at the International Student Center of Nagoya city.

>>Joint Surety Service for Residential Leases of the Nagoya University International Student Support Association

The Nagoya University International Student Support Association offers a Joint Surety Service for Residential Leases to international students enrolled in Nagoya University on the condition that students join the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan (Ryugakusei jutaku sogo Hosho) of the Japan Educational Exchange and Services (JEES).
The insurance period of the International Student Housing General Compensation Plan of JEES lasts one or two years. You must be insured at all times when you have a lease of an apartment.

>>Overseas Students Housing Deposit Loan

Independently-financed students of any of the Aichi Prefecture universities or colleges who take a lease of an accommodation within the bounds of Nagoya city are eligible to apply for this loan.The loan is without interest but the amount of loan cannot be more than the housing deposit required. The maximum amount you can borrow is 300,000 yen. The loan must be paid back to the lender within 10 months.

• Nagoya University Co-op introduces accommodation to students. The commission depends on the accommodation.
• Housing information directly provided Nagoya University International Student Advising Office (ISA Office) and ECIS is placed on bulletin boards on the 1st floor of the ECIS building.
